The Psalm of the Week

Again I want to type a big thanks to those that posted a comment on Psalm 71 last week. Loved, loved reading your comments. This week I am inviting all of you (yes, that means you) to play along...read the assigned psalm, meditate on it, and share via a comment how God is speaking to you through the psalm.

The psalm of the week is Psalm 47.

Yesterday in my Life Group I asked my ladies to define worship. I am reading Desiring God by John Piper and on page 84 he wrote, "...worship is a way of gladly reflecting back to God the radiance of His worth." And on page 92 this, "Worship is authentic when affections for God arise in the heart as an end in themselves." Not because we are trying to get anything or find entertainment from it or accomplish anything other than praising the One that is worthy to be praised.

What does Psalm 47 say about worship and/or praise? As a result of reading the psalm, what are you challenged to do, if anything?

"Clap your hands, all you peoples; shout to God with a jubilant cry." (verse 1, HCSB)

Serving the King,

Jeanette

I'm just struck with how many times we are commanded to SING praises to God. No one has any excuse to not sing!!

The thrust of vs 5 is that God is exalted when we lift up praises...so as we praise Him He is adored and exalted.
that's cool!

Okay, I have never blogged before EVER but feel like you were calling me out with the "yes, that means you"! This psalm is great for me because sometimes I feel like there is a negative stigma for just loving the music and really getting into it! I am proud to be a Christian and I love to clap, tap my toes and maybe on occasion lift a hand or two! I think that this proves that it is okay and God truly enjoys when we do that! He also doesn't care that I am by no means a great singer which is fabulous! Thanks for encouraging me to read this one!

I love that this passage talks about who God is. He is the "great king" and "sits on His holy throne". We worship Him when we acknowledge this. We sing praises and clap our hands for joy, because what else can we do? He's God, and He chooses to love us. Wow!

What stuck out to me in this Psalm was that no matter what chaos our world is in around us, it all belongs to God. For that we can shout out in praises because we have nothing to fear really because we know the "King of all the earth". He is Mighty, Awesome and is and will forever be "highly honored everywhere"!!!

I absolutely love it that God speaks to us individually through His Word. Here's a thought I had this week -- I was jogging in the park and I heard a bird singing...I wondered if he was praising. Random, I know, but praise is compulsory.

You're right, Kathy, we don't have an excuse not to sing and, Julee, I'm so glad it doesn't matter cuz I am not a great singer either! I just love to sing. I agree, what else can we do? He is King of the earth and worthy to be adored and exalted!
